ChatGPT MacOS App Download
How to download the ChatGPT Desktop app for Mac. Getting the ChatGPT dmg installer. Installing the ChatGPT Mac app.
ChatGPT Desktop is an OpenAI macOS application for interaction using text, voice, and images with the GPT-4o LLM (an AI large language model).
The macOS ChatGPT Desktop app is now available for download (see a link to the .dmg
file here). You can download the app at any time but when you try to log in, OpenAI may not have granted access for your account yet.
You can see my guide to the ChatGPT Desktop app to learn more about how to use it.
Other applications you may want
If you're installing ChatGPT Desktop, now's a good time to add Warp Terminal and Zed Editor. Warp Terminal is an AI-assisted console for tools that give you unrestricted access to the OpenAI API and other LLMs. Zed Editor is the best AI-assisted editor for text and code. You may want to install these two applications when you set up ChatGPT Desktop. Both are free; you can get Warp Terminal here and Zed Editor here.
ChatGPT Mac app
OpenAI announced ChatGPT Desktop for the Mac on May 13, 2024. It is not available on Windows or Linux. The app requires a Mac running macOS 14 and Apple Silicon (M1, M2, or M3). It isn't available for Intel Macs. You should check macOS and update macOS to make sure your macOS is up to date.
Following the announcement, OpenAI started rolling out the app to users, beginning with ChatGPT Plus users. Free users will eventually be able to use the app (with lower usage limits).
If you are eager to use the app, you can sign up for ChatGPT Plus at $20/month but there's no guarantee you'll get access to the desktop app immediately.
Download ChatGPT Desktop dmg file
Here's where to download the ChatGPT macOS .dmg
installer for the ChatGPT Desktop app. The domain oaistatic.com
is the site for OpenAI downloads. The file name is ChatGPT_Desktop_public_latest.dmg
.
You can download the app at any time but when you try to log in, OpenAI may not have enabled access for your account yet.
If you have a ChatGPT Plus subscription, you can find the download link under your profile photo in the ChatGPT web browser application when you are logged in. Widen the browser window until your profile photo appears and look for "Download the macOS app." It's easier to click the link I've provided above; it's the same link.
You can download the app from the ChatGPT Plus web browser application
Many people expect to find the app on the OpenAI Download ChatGPT web page, but it is not yet available to users without a paid account. The web page points to the ChatGPT web browser application with a Check eligibility link.
Don't download the app using any link that contains a domain other than openai.com
or oaistatic.com
. Other sites could be scammers or offer older "web app" versions of ChatGPT.
Install ChatGPT Desktop
Install the app like any other downloaded macOS application. Click to open the .dmg
file, then drag the app to your Applications folder, and launch it by clicking.
Log in with your OpenAI account
After launching the app, you must log in to your OpenAI account. If you don't have an account, you can create one at https://platform.openai.com/signup.
After downloading the app, launching it, and logging in, you may not have access
You'll see a message, "You do not have access to the desktop app yet" if OpenAI has not enabled access for your account. Be patient and try your login again another day.
What you see if login is successful
If login is successful, you'll see a screen, "Introducing the launcher."
How to use the ChatGPT Desktop app
The ChatGPT Mac app interface is straightforward and minimalistic, controlling only the app's settings and input methods. The application's real power lies in its AI model, which you will control using text or voice.
